about

Soundtrack to the horror film "Chronicles of Breath" (2015), directed by x francis xavier.

I was commissioned in 2015 to compose a film score for a low budget horror movie directed by a person named x francis xavier. I never met x francis. they had contacted me through a mutual friend (cindy elaria-juarez, who made the film poster/album cover) after hearing some of my work. We struck up an email conversation, but they were at times cagey about the nature of the work, and the film. I was eager to make a horror movie score, however, and so I agreed to try some things out.

It was at this point that xavier began sending me scenes from the movie. no explanation. no script. no notes. just snippet after snippet of horrifying visuals. real looking acid-dosed fiends peering into darkness. a vile pit of snakes and insects catching on fire. brutal perversions. strobe lights everywhere. most scenes coated in a burning bright red hue. actors were painted red. walls/doors/stairs covered in red. red everywhere.

i was fascinated and terrified and invested. i wrote music to match atmosphere. I tried to make things that scared myself. i wanted them to be scary even if there was total darkness in the film. x francis was satisfied with some of the work...others, they scoffed at via email. they wanted real torture music. i worked harder. x francis began sending back some track ideas as well...manipulations of my music. sometimes added weirdness. I don't know that x francis played any real instruments but they mentioned "found instruments." We worked well like this. Still never met.

We had about 75 ideas. only a fraction exist on this album, but I had enough to fill 2 hours of this insane red snuff film i was seeing through watermarked vimeos and private youtube links. I became obsessive. I was scaring myself every day writing this music in the dark. waiting until my arm hairs stood up before I'd stop on a track. the additions x francis made were beautiful and haunting and gross and horrifying. I wanted to see the whole film with my music. i thought about this a lot.

At this point...x francis stopped contacting me. It was very sudden. When i sent them my finished tracks, maybe 50 tracks in all, there was no response. I wrote a few emails, asking what was up. no response. I spoke with cindy, she hadn't seen them anywhere around or heard from them. It was upsetting, honestly. I never met this person but we had worked on this creative thing together. I felt unfulfilled. And worried. x francis seemed like a pretty dark creative type...I was worried that something had happened.

i tried finding family and friends. they didn't have a lot. their family said they hadn't talked to them in a bit...but didn't say anything had happened, like suicide or jail or anything. they just hadn't talked to them. maybe a friend or two of their (now-deleted) facebook page had similar experience...just no real contact in years, maybe an email back and forth.

not a single one had heard about any movie. not a single one even knew x francis xavier was even interested in making movies. turned out they had actually been working in sanitation for a long time before drifting out of that into...well, who knows. A few said they thought they might be into horror movies. but otherwise...nothing.

I stopped looking. x francis never contacted me again. I had drinks with Cindy at some point in 2018 and we talked about the whole thing. Turned out she really didn't know them well at all, just casual. but as we drank whiskey and wondered if xavier had ever finished the film, Cindy said something to me that stuck with me; she said she had hung out with x francis a few times...but couldn't ever remember seeing their eyes. They wore dark glasses, or had em shut or something...but she can't remember ever seeing them. and, I think about that a lot.

So far as I know, x francis xavier left the planet or just went away or found some place to hide. Their film never showed up, and their private links died away one by one. There's virtually no trace of him on social media or anywhere. It's weird. I never really get over it. Maybe one day they'll scare the shit out of me again and just pop up.

Anyway, here's the soundtrack to a movie that exists somewhere, even if just in a twisted brain.

thanks x francis. hope you were ok.
